It’s an amazing day to say the least. With the official announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for nominations in all categories we find that not 1 but 4 stop motion films have been officially selected for the 2020 Academy Awards. The Oscars are considered the biggest awards honor in the United States and by some even in the World. So to have 4 stop motion animated films being nominated for consideration is a big achievement considering how much of an underdog the art form is in the eyes of the general public and how animation is unwanted step child of Hollywood studio elite. With the announcement of the films Daughter by Daria Kascheeva, Sister by Siqi Song, Mémorable by Bruno Collet and Jean-François Le Corre, which are all nominated for Best Short Animated film, and LAIKA’s feature film Missing Link, we find a playing field of ingenuity and creativeness within stop motion animation that has never been scene before.
From moving camera to look like handheld movement, to inventive puppet designs, and expanded worlds incorporating CGI and Stop Motion together, the newest editions to the Academy’s consideration are nothing short of genius and awe-inspiring. Two of the films, Sister and Mémorable can be found in entirety online, while the other 2 films; Daughter and Missing Link, are available to see as trailer clips. We’ve provided you with the video links below to make your hunt for these films a little easier. Check them out and enjoy.
Congratulations to ALL the nominees!!!
