The Cristal d´Annecy winner (2018) short by Neatherlands animator Nienke Deutz, deals with the changes a friendship has to face and how sometimes those changes can separate friends.
The use of plastic cut outs in a cardboard set gives it a sense of being and not being there; the transparency of the material mimics the girl´s friendship and feelings. A different coming of age story, we face with them how every day in a summer, things start shifting as puberty hits.
“Inseparable best friends spend their last summer holiday of childhood amusing themselves around the house. As summer progresses, their bodies start to morph and shift, and an awkwardness descends on their friendship. Puberty seems determined to interrupt their bond.”
