There is a reason why Mexico is fast becoming the next big Mecca of stop motion animation. Not only does the culture support the arts in all of its forms but embraces the surreal and ubsurd in a way overlooked or shunned in many countries.
Juan José Medina created this masterpiece a few years ago but it is just as powerful today as it was the day it was released. Jaulas-Cages is a true expression of oppression and confinement while allowing the protagonist to escape his confines and find freedom through the retaliation and revenge. The powerful message is only a single aspect of what makes this film powerful. The imagery and artistry of the puppets, sets, and design along with the animation are truly what make this film a modern classic.
