DCIFF Launches Y-CAM.org: A New Online Home for the Next Generation of Teen Filmmakers
The DC Independent Film Festival (DCIFF) has unveiled Y-CAM.org, a newly launched online hub designed specifically for teen filmmakers ages 13 to 19. The platform marks a major expansion of DCIFF’s long-running youth programs, offering young creatives a centralized space to learn, collaborate, and access real filmmaking opportunities.
The launch represents a significant step in DCIFF’s effort to reach a wider and more diverse audience of aspiring storytellers — especially students from underserved communities who may not otherwise have access to filmmaking education or industry mentorship.
“We’re thrilled to be launching a digital space where aspiring teen filmmakers can connect, learn, and create together,” said Deirdre Evans-Pritchard, Executive Director of DCIFF. “Y-CAM.org marks a new chapter for DCIFF — one that will allow us to reach and inspire more young storytellers than ever before.”
A Centralized Hub for Young Creators
Y-CAM.org brings together all of DCIFF’s youth-oriented initiatives under one umbrella. The site serves as a one-stop resource featuring:
-
Filmmaking workshops with experienced industry professionals
-
A curated list of internships, grants, and project opportunities
-
A dedicated Discord server where teens can collaborate, share works-in-progress, and receive feedback
-
Community news and updates related to youth filmmaking

This fully online component expands DCIFF’s reach beyond Washington, D.C., giving young filmmakers across the region — and eventually across the country — a centralized place to grow skills and build a creative network.
The Y-CAM High School Film Festival Returns in 2026
A major pillar of the new platform is the Y-CAM High School Film Festival, scheduled for March 13–15, 2026 in Washington, D.C.
The annual festival offers high school filmmakers hands-on experience, professional feedback, portfolio development opportunities, and exposure to industry pathways. Students can submit animations, documentaries, fiction shorts, and experimental works.
Past editions of Y-CAM have helped launch young filmmakers’ creative careers, and DCIFF hopes the tighter integration with Y-CAM.org will broaden access and participation.
New $600 Y-CAM Production Awards
In conjunction with the launch of Y-CAM.org, DCIFF announced a new Y-CAM Production Award initiative. The program will grant $600 to six emerging filmmakers annually from:
-
Washington, D.C.
-
Maryland
-
Virginia
-
Pennsylvania
-
West Virginia
The grants will be awarded three times per year, with two recipients per cycle.
These funds are intended to support young filmmakers in developing new projects, purchasing equipment, or advancing works already in progress.
This new award expands upon DCIFF’s long tradition of supporting youth behind the camera — including their summer intensives and educational workshops for middle- and high-school students.
A Virtual Alumni Event to Celebrate the Launch
To celebrate Y-CAM.org’s debut, DCIFF will host a virtual alumni event on Monday, November 24 at 8 p.m. The event will feature young filmmakers who previously participated in DCIFF’s youth programs, offering perspectives on how the experience shaped their creative journeys.
“Attending Y-CAM’s summer program was a transformative experience for me,” said Jayshawn Lester, a past participant. “The welcoming environment quickly put my nerves at ease. I learned so much about filmmaking, from storytelling to hands-on production. The mentorship was invaluable, and working alongside other passionate creators truly fueled my excitement.”
A New Chapter for Youth Filmmaking
With Y-CAM.org, DCIFF is positioning itself as one of the most forward-thinking festival organizations in the youth filmmaking space. The combination of in-person opportunities, digital access, production grants, and community-centered collaboration creates a powerful resource for the next generation of filmmakers — including young animators eager to explore stop-motion, mixed media, and other experimental forms.
As the site evolves, Y-CAM.org is expected to become an important launchpad for new voices and bold creative ideas from teens across the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond.
