2:30 – Sophie Caswell’s Stop-Motion Portrait of Obsession and Light

Emerging animator Sophie Caswell delivers a striking and atmospheric stop-motion short with 2:30, a handmade, mixed-media film that follows Luna, a moth dentist whose seemingly simple home practice spirals into a haunting portrait of addiction and fixation. The result is a deeply personal, craft-driven work that signals the arrival of a unique new voice in indie stop-motion.

Caswell, also known online as Elderly Footstep, wrote, fabricated, animated, lit, and edited the entire film herself—an impressive feat considering its elaborate worldbuilding, tactile detail, and emotional precision. Shot using Dragonframe and a Nikon D3300, 2:30 brings to life a steampunk world made almost entirely from recycled materials. From Luna’s delicate moth wings to the worn-down textures of her workspace, the film carries a tactile presence that could only come from handcrafted miniature artistry.

A Story of Light, Desire, and Decline

The film’s premise is deceptively whimsical: Luna, a tiny moth dentist, begins offering dental services from her home. But as she is drawn—almost involuntarily—toward brighter and brighter light sources, her world slips into a restless spiral of obsession. The metaphor is powerful: a creature biologically drawn to light becomes consumed by it, blurring the lines between instinct, desire, and self-destruction.

Caswell describes the project as an exploration of addiction, obsession, and the myth of the tortured artist, themes that emerge through nuanced performance animation and carefully crafted visual storytelling. Luna’s movements jitter with anxious energy, and her environment grows increasingly distorted as her fixation intensifies. It’s a rare student film that feels thematically mature and emotionally cohesive.

Handmade Craft With Heart

One of the most impressive aspects of 2:30 is its physical world. Every set piece, puppet, and prop—right down to the surgical tools—was built by hand. Caswell’s approach prioritizes texture: frayed cloth, worn paper, patina-coated metal, and mixed-media materials create an aesthetic that feels simultaneously whimsical and unsettling.

Additional craft contributions come from:

  • Julia Wright – glasswork and ceramics

  • Skylar Januszkiewicz – music production, sound effects, and the performance of the “Blue Bunny” character

The result is a unified creative voice supported by a small but talented team of collaborators.

A Festival-Ready Debut

Although 2:30 is still early in its public life, Caswell is already no stranger to the festival circuit. Her broader animation work has screened at events including the CineQueer Film Festival (Atlanta), Palm Springs International Animation Festival, and Art All Night Trenton Film Festival. 2:30 itself has screened at university-based showcases and research symposiums, with more festival submissions expected through 2025–2026.

Given its craft, clarity of execution, and distinctive tone, the short seems well-positioned to make an impression as it continues its festival journey.

A Standout from a Rising Talent

With 2:30, Sophie Caswell demonstrates an exceptional understanding of both storytelling and tactile animation. Her ability to blend metaphor, visual symbolism, and handcrafted detail marks her as a filmmaker to watch within the indie stop-motion community.

The film’s combination of recycled-material artistry, steampunk aesthetics, and emotionally resonant themes positions it as one of the more memorable student-driven projects of the year.

Stop Motion Magazine will be keeping an eye on Caswell’s future work—and hopes to spotlight more of her process, behind-the-scenes builds, and artistic inspirations in upcoming issues.
