The Refusers – When Garbage Refuses to Stay Silent
In a quiet corner of the city, where yesterday’s possessions wait for disposal, a strange kind of rebellion begins. An old mattress sighs, “They say I’m dirty…”—and before long, discarded lamps, shoes, and appliances find their voices too. Together, they transform their shared rejection into an unforgettable song of resilience.
This is The Refusers, a 2-minute stop-motion musical directed and written by Wiep Teeuwisse, produced by Tinsel Studio, and distributed by MIYU Distribution. Short, witty, and heartfelt, the film reimagines urban waste as a chorus of forgotten characters yearning for another chance at meaning.
Finding Life in What’s Left Behind
Known for her poetic sensibility and surreal humor, Wiep Teeuwisse breathes empathy into the inanimate. In The Refusers, she uses everyday trash as stand-ins for human emotions—regret, hope, and defiance. The objects may have been thrown away, but through movement, music, and personality, they refuse to fade quietly into obscurity.
At first, the story unfolds as a somber reflection on waste. But as the trash begins to sing, the tone shifts toward celebration—a spontaneous musical uprising that transforms a lonely street corner into a stage. “Their enthusiasm evolves into a spectacle of song and dance,” as the official synopsis reads, but it’s also a statement about renewal and the beauty hidden in what society discards.
A Tiny Film With Big Craft
Despite its short runtime of just over two minutes, The Refusers showcases exquisite craftsmanship. The miniature street set was meticulously built and lit to evoke the melancholy of an empty city night. Every prop—from a flickering lamp post to a sagging mattress—was hand-crafted to balance realism with stylized charm.

The Rise of Tinsel Studio
The Refusers marks one of the first releases from Tinsel Studio, a Netherlands-based collective dedicated to tactile storytelling and experimentation in animation. Founded in 2023, the studio has quickly gained attention for its analog sensibility and inventive world-building.
By merging physical craftsmanship with narrative playfulness, Tinsel Studio is helping redefine what short stop-motion films can achieve—embracing brevity not as a limitation, but as a strength.
From Trash to Triumph
Since its premiere, The Refusers has charmed audiences at festivals around the world, including Annecy, ITFS Stuttgart, Animafest Zagreb, and Kaboom. The film won the Trickstar Nature Award at Stuttgart for its ecological message and inventive use of materials.
In just over two minutes, Teeuwisse delivers an ecological allegory that feels both intimate and universal—a musical protest where every discarded object demands to be seen, heard, and remembered.
