Filmmaker interview (Spanish)

A preserved moth is the beginning of an awakening in Insectario: Despertar, the upcoming stop-motion feature directed by Sofía Carrillo and written by Monika Revilla. Lexi works with her entomologist uncle, Dr. Krause, preserving insects. When she removes an Attacus atlas moth from its display and takes it home to conceal her mistake, the creature comes to life. The premise opens a gothic fantasy in which the natural world refuses to remain an inert collection. [1][2]

A feature taking shape

Península Films & Entertainment has joined the project alongside Pimienta, with the collaboration announced during the Morelia International Film Festival. The international production also involves Cuadernos de Cine, Inicia Films, Producciones Ocho, Trickster Pictures, and BreakThru Films. Carrillo, whose earlier work includes Cerulia, is making her feature debut. [1]

The project remains in development and production preparation; the materials currently available are an introduction to its world rather than evidence of a finished film. The video at the top is an Ibermedia Next interview with Carrillo and producer Valérie Delpierre, in Spanish. It is presented here as a filmmaker conversation, not as a trailer. [3]

Ecology through gothic fantasy

In that conversation, the filmmakers connect the story to ecological loss and disappearing insect populations. They also discuss experimenting with tools that can support the physical production, including 3D-printed replacement faces and objects, set extensions, and research into digital cleanup. These are development explorations, not a claim that every proposed method will appear in the completed feature. [3]

The released images establish an intricate, shadowed environment. Display cases and specimen-like details make looking itself part of the atmosphere: this is a world of close examination, fragile bodies, and things held still. Stop motion gives that premise a particularly apt visual language. A medium that brings carefully positioned objects to life can make the escape from a collection feel both material and uncanny.

The central dramatic question is already compelling: what happens when an object classified and pinned down becomes a living presence? As Carrillo’s feature develops, the relationship between a child’s mistake, a moth’s revival, and the larger ecological story gives its miniature world an ambition beyond ornament.
