Penny Proud has a holiday disaster to fix. In A Proud Family Wizmas, an accident puts Christmas in jeopardy, sending her on a mission to save the holiday for Emilyville and the wider world. The Disney+ special arrives November 14, bringing the familiar family into a new physical form: stop-motion puppets in a miniature Christmas world. [1]
Familiar characters, a different kind of performance
The production brings together creator and director Bruce W. Smith, writer and executive producer Ralph Farquhar, co-director David Brooks, Disney Television Animation, and Portland studio HouseSpecial. Six new songs by composer Kurt Farquhar give the adventure its musical structure. Kyla Pratt returns as Penny, with Tommy Davidson as Oscar, Paula Jai Parker as Trudy, Jo Marie Payton as Suga Mama, and Cedric the Entertainer as Uncle Bobby. [1][2]
The guest cast expands that holiday world: Anderson .Paak plays a mall elf, JB Smoove voices a mall Santa, and Lil Rel Howery plays Bubble. Gabrielle Union also joins the special as Talia Rogue. The ensemble suggests a story built around both Penny’s urgent mission and the comic personalities she encounters along the way. [2]
Translating the family into miniature
The released imagery makes the change of medium immediately legible. Rounded puppet faces and sculpted hair retain the characters’ strong silhouettes, while fabric, trim, and dimensional scenery give their surroundings a different sense of weight. Christmas decorations occupy actual space around the performers; a doorway or a room becomes a stage that can be lit and photographed from within.
That translation is the production’s most interesting promise. Recognizable character design gives the audience a point of entry, but stop motion asks those designs to communicate through physical poses, spacing, and controlled changes of expression. The stills preserve the family’s broad comic energy while making room for the tactile appeal of a holiday special.
The trailer above offers the first look at that meeting of family comedy, musical storytelling, and miniature filmmaking. The slideshow gathers released production images, allowing a closer look at the puppets and their environments ahead of the special’s Disney+ premiere.
