A Story of Defiance and Loss
Set in 1936, Carmela follows its titular character, a young woman who joins the militias at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Alongside other female combatants, she faces a dual struggle—fighting fascism while defending the social progress achieved under Spain’s Second Republic. When a grenade accident changes her life forever, Carmela’s personal sacrifice becomes a haunting symbol of the countless women whose bravery reshaped history.
The film’s visual realism is heightened by Mallols’ deliberate pacing and emotional restraint. Every frame is sculpted with precision—from the texture of the uniforms to the expressive faces of the puppets, brought to life through the delicate craftsmanship of the Pangur Animation team.
An International Collaboration
Carmela is the product of an ambitious international co-production between Spain and France. The puppets were fabricated across both countries, with armatures developed in France and finishing work done in Valencia. Filmed in 4K, the short showcases a refined cinematic approach rarely seen in historical animation. The production also marks a significant partnership with Foliascope, known for its contribution to European animation and handcrafted storytelling.
Festival Recognition
Since its premiere, Carmela has garnered critical acclaim on the festival circuit. The film won the Audience Award in the Animazine section at Festival de Málaga 2025, and most recently received the International Animation Award at FICCS (Rauch, Argentina). Its poignant storytelling and historical authenticity have resonated with audiences and critics alike, positioning it as one of this year’s standout animated works.
