“Montreal, Wednesday, September 2nd, 2020 – Festival Stop Motion Montréal is ready and raring to go for a 12th edition that will run virtually from September 14 to 20, inviting viewers to participate from the comfort of their very own Home Sweet Home! Following last year’s edition under the theme of stop motion in the digital age and without skipping a beat, the Festival worked to adapt this year’s event into an online format as part of its mandate to provide an international platform to artists in the field from near and far and to showcase stop motion animation across the globe.
Adaptation means change, but this is one change not to be feared! In 2020, the Festival will offer its main activities to the public worldwide via the VUCAVU platform for seven days, four more days than all previous editions. Local and international viewers will be able to tune in to the special guest conferences and short film programs that are at the heart of the Festival by acquiring a pass for the entire event or by purchasing tickets to activities à la carte.
The programming team had a tough job in narrowing down their numerous favourites amongst the 72 films in competition representing 30 different countries as well as the special selections of Quebec and Scottish-made films from their respective thematic programs. The Canadian and Quebec premieres not to be missed: À la mer poussière by Héloïse Ferlay, Sororelle by Louise Mercadier and Frédéric Even and Un coeur d’or by Simon Filliot. Russian director Dina Velikovskaya, two-time award winner from previous Festival editions (Emerging Film – 2011 and Public’s Choice – 2012), offers a new film this year; Uzi (Ties), which is made using 3D drawings created with resin printing pens, an original technique never before used.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
The Festival offers once again this year a special program of short films especially appropriate for young audiences as part of the youth films program of the short film competition. Musical films, fairy tales, adventure and comedy await and will appeal to youth and adults alike. Quma y las Bestias by Javier Ignacio, Luna Crook and Iván Stur transports the viewer in the middle of a savannah teeming with wild beasts, while The Happy Song by Trevor Hardy and Sum of its Parts by Alisa Stern will make the little ones dance to the rhythm of their catchy music.
In collaboration with the Edinburgh Short Film Festival (ESFF), the Scottish Films Program offers a retrospective of graduation films from the Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), a real talent incubator in Scotland. View works from local filmmakers who have been the pride of the stop motion animation scene in the UK since the turn of the millennium. Stop motion aficionados will surely recognize the famous names of Will Becher from the Aardman Animations studio and Ainslie Henderson, an independent filmmaker whose most recent film Archie is in competition this year.
Following a huge success from the Festival’s 2019 edition, the TNT adult program (Terrifying, Naked and Twisted) returns with its daring, dark and sometimes bloody themes! Three Canadian films are on the program, including a film created during the confinement by artist Daniel Sterlin-Altman, Pote de baise. Also not to be missed, the documentary film Just A Guy by Shoko Hara (Quebec premiere) and Contra-Filé by Pedro Fontes (North American premiere), two films with strong visuals whose premises will take the audience out of their comfort zone.
PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOPS
As usual, the Festival offers high-calibre professional workshops from September 14 to 18 in collaboration with Concordia University and the Concordia University Part-Time Faculty Association (CUPFA). These technical skills stop motion production workshops feature the brilliant dynamic duo behind Montreal studio See Creature and online educational platform See Learn Academy, as well as experienced animator and published French author Julia Peguet. Both workshops will demonstrate how to perfect one’s animation skills and will be presented via Zoom online upon registration.
SPECIAL CONFERENCE GUESTS
The Festival also has the extreme pleasure of hosting renowned stop motion artists as their special conference guests. These virtual master classes will allow online festival-goers to discover the tricks of the trade and learn technical film animation skills while getting secrets straight from the top of the crop. One conference will be led by the distinguished Montreal filmmaker Jean-François Lévesque, who will take us on a deep dive behind the scenes to explore his latest personal, and also mysterious film titled, I, Barnabé. The conference will be presented live on Zoom to pass holders at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 17, and the recorded version will be rebroadcast on VUCAVU from September 18 to 20 for à la carte ticket viewers and pass holders alike. Festival-goers will also have the chance to revisit the director’s first stop motion film, The Necktie, which will be featured in this year’s special Quebec Talents thematic program.
The Festival is thrilled to host another celebrity guest, Justin Rasch, a highly talented American animator whose exceptional work in action and combat scenes has delighted an explosion of Internet users. Justin has participated in feature film productions such as Kubo and the Two Strings (Laika Studios) in addition to having worked for video game companies including Blizzard Entertainment. His conference takes place Saturday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m. live on Zoom and will be rebroadcast the following day on VUCAVU.
Last but definitely not least, the Festival invites star lawyer Vanessa Loubineau to answer all of your questions around copyright issues and is pleased to have her lead a conference this year (in French only) called Demystifying Copyright for Stop Motion. In collaboration with ARTeM Studio Juridique, a firm specializing in entertainment law, this webinar takes place Wednesday, September 16 at 1:00 p.m. live on Zoom and will be rebroadcast on VUCAVU from September 17 to 20.

Tickets for à la carte programs via VUCAVU
To view individual program activities à la carte, festival-goers must first create a user account on the VUCAVU platform. The creation of a user account is free of charge and may involve a short activation wait period. Activities will be available online from September 14 to 20 and will be billed individually. The cost will be $5 per short film program and $7 per special guest conference rebroadcast. Each program purchase will be available for viewing for a 48-hour period.
