Biidaaban

Passing on old tales, stories and ancient legends keeps them alive. Through storytelling, customs preserve their meaning and can be known by new generations. Now those stories can pass on trough new media like animation, getting them to more people than ever.

Canadian animator Amanda Strong brings this story about connecting to ones roots by renowned writer and author Leanne Betasamosake Simpson to life with her beautiful animation.

“The Dawn Comes” tells the story of a young Anishinaabe (meaning “the good humans”, the people that were created by divine breath. A group of culturally-related indigenous peoples who are resident in what are now Canada and the United States) artist named Biidaaban and a 10,000-year-old shapeshifter named Sabe, who join forces to reclaim the maple trees from a suburban Ontario neighborhood by harvesting their sap in the early hours of morning.”
