Today we celebrate the 218 anniversary of Belgian physicist and mathematician, creator of the Phenakistoscope, Joseph-Antoine Ferdinand Plateau.
He lost his eyesight before reaching middle age, some say because of his obsessive experiments with light (he watched the sun for periods of 25 seconds, investigating about persistence of luminous impressions on the retina), others say as consequence of a disease.
His research about luminous persistence leaded him among other things, to create the Phenakistoscope, inspiration for the birth of cinema, later on.
