Tee Ken Ng joined australian comedian and musician Tim Minchin, for his video Leaving LA.
The animator has long been working with zoetropes and vinyl designs for commercial spots and music videos. Life long friends, the two talked about displaying “the two dimensionality of Hollywood (amongst other things)” and how it “was a fitting medium to depict a place of superficiality and facades”, where the singer is feeling trapped and wanted out.
The single is part of a future record set to be released later this year.
Tee Ken Ng created 12 zoetropes with his team, filming with an iPhone 11 and different apps, moving the camera while they moved.
“All the frames of animation were captured from footage we shot across 2 days in Sydney with Tim and his band. Every frame was then printed and cut out from paper and arranged around zoetrope discs.”
