Returning home for the holidays can mean reconnecting with old friends—and revisiting insecurities you thought you had left behind. That familiar experience provides the starting point for “e.l.f. Made to Stand Out,” a new holiday campaign that puts handcrafted stop-motion animation at the center of its storytelling.

The film follows three college-aged friends, Kit, Echo, and Cleo, as they reunite in their hometown and prepare for a potentially awkward night out. Kit is the sentimental friend who keeps the group together, Echo is the talkative presence, and Cleo is a bookish introvert. Their journey turns on a reassuring discovery: the qualities that make them feel different can also become their strengths. Narrated by Alan Cumming, the 60-second campaign launched November 2, 2026, as e.l.f.’s first holiday campaign. Official announcement.

Cami Kwan, co-founder of Apartment D Films, directed the production. SHADOW developed the creative concept, casting, and script, working with Cumming’s longtime collaborator Adam Goldman on the writing. According to e.l.f., women comprised 90 percent of the puppet team and the entire animation team. Production credits.

For stop-motion audiences, much of the pleasure lies in the characters themselves. Brightly colored hair, oversized glasses, expressive faces, and carefully styled costumes give the trio distinct personalities before the story has much time to unfold. The textures remain visible, inviting viewers to appreciate these characters as physical objects brought to life through performance.

The miniature environments extend that appeal. A dressing-table scene brings the friends together among mirrors, photographs, tiny accessories, and beauty products. Elsewhere, dimensional puppets share the frame with flat, illustrated partygoers, creating a playful contrast between the central characters and the crowd surrounding them. The result gives the campaign a graphic energy while retaining the tactile presence that makes stop motion so engaging.

The supplied production photographs offer another rewarding perspective. They show puppet faces being painted, character designs beside works in progress, and artists reaching into miniature sets to adjust performances. These images make the scale of the work immediately apparent: a seemingly casual gesture on screen begins with careful decisions made by human hands.

The campaign’s message about individuality also finds an effective partner in its chosen medium. Costume, silhouette, texture, and pose give each puppet an identity that viewers can recognize at a glance. The craft helps carry the story.

“e.l.f. Made to Stand Out” demonstrates how much character a short commercial can communicate through thoughtful design and animation. Apartment D’s expressive puppets, detailed miniature sets, and carefully crafted performances give the story its warmth, making the friends’ celebration of individuality tangible on screen.
