From Edinburgh College of Art, scottish animator Grant Holden brings us his short film, about the mundane, people who mostly blend in urban landscapes, like cleaners. Holden wanted to put the spotlight on these unseen workers, using an old talking brush being used by a new cleaner. The conversations between them makes us wonder how many times have we thanked these people for their work, so necessary for the proper function of a city, a building, a street?
“Set in a car park, ‘Cleaning in Progress’ focuses on the bristly relationship between a cleaner and his talking brush. Other than its innate ability to speak via its bristles, the brush is just like any regular old broom and has seen cleaners come and go. The young cleaner, on the other hand, is more naive yet committed to the job. Tensions arise between them in their differences of approach and attitude where ultimately, one cannot do their job without the other.”
