“Soy Frankelda”: Mexico’s First Stop-Motion Feature Film Premieres at Annecy

“Soy Frankelda,” the first-ever stop-motion feature film created in Mexico by Cinema Fantasma, is set to make its world premiere at the prestigious Festival international du film d’animation d’Annecy, a highlight for Mexican stop-motion animation at the Annecy Film Festival 2025. The film has been selected as part of the Official Selection in the Annecy Presents section, a remarkable achievement for Mexican animation and a testament to the team’s dedication and creativity.

Founded by Roy and Arturo Ambriz, Cinema Fantasma has built its reputation as a pioneering studio in the field of stop-motion animation. This milestone is the culmination of years of tireless work, boundless imagination, and a deep passion for storytelling. The creators describe “Soy Frankelda” as a project born from “the stubbornness of dreaming big,” a refusal to give up when the odds seemed insurmountable, and an unwavering belief in the power of imagination as both a refuge and an engine for growth, showcasing creative resilience and animated storytelling at its finest.

A Collaborative Triumph

The creators Roy & Arturo Ambriz expressed heartfelt gratitude to the many individuals and organizations who contributed to the realization of this groundbreaking film.

  • The Team: The project owes much to its tireless team of animators, artists, and storytellers whose creativity and hard work brought the film to life.
  • Creative Partners: Special thanks were extended to the creative collaborators, including Pablo Calvillo, Fernanda Arce, and Mariana Martínez, who believed in the characters from their very first sketches.

  • Warner Bros Discovery LATAM: The studio’s support was instrumental in bringing this dark, brave, and deeply human story to the screen.
  • Guillermo del Toro: Serving as the film’s godfather, del Toro’s guidance was pivotal in the final stages of production.
  • Annecy Festival: By showcasing the film, the festival provides a platform to introduce “Soy Frankelda” to audiences around the world.

A Story Born from Shadows and Dreams

The story of “Soy Frankelda” revolves around its titular character, Frankelda, alongside Herneval, Procustes, and a cast of horrors who dwell in the shadows and the human heart. The creators promise a narrative that is as imaginative as it is emotionally resonant, blending dark themes with universal human truths.

An Invitation to Join the Journey

“Soy Frankelda” is more than a film; it’s a shared experience. The creators invite audiences to not only watch but also feel and create alongside them. “This movie is yours too,” they declare, urging viewers to embrace the story and its world.

As “Soy Frankelda” prepares to make its debut on one of the world’s most celebrated animation stages, it signals a bold new chapter for Mexican cinema and stop-motion artistry. This is a film born from passion, resilience, and the collective effort of a team that dared to dream big. The world is invited to join them in celebrating this historic achievement.
