Competing in ANNECY this year, amongst the 37 short films are these stop motion shorts:
From USA, Patrick Smith (Candy Shop) and his wife, Kaori Ishida, comes “Beyond Noh”, where Smith rhythmically animates 3,475 individual masks from all over the world, beginning with the distinctive masks of the Japanese Noh theater and continuing on a cultural journey through ritual, utility, deviance, and politics.
From Congo (The Democratic Republic of the) and Belgium, Frank Mukunday and Trésor Tshibangu bring “Machini”: A story that reflects on how “by necessity, and especially because of machines, we have become sleepwalkers, deprived of God, the damned, and guinea pigs for history’s black market.”
From Sweden, “Något att minnas”(Something to Remember), Niki Lindroth Von Bahr tells the story of “A lullaby before the great disaster.”
From Italy and United Kingdom, Andrea Vinciguerra brings us “No, I Don’t Want to Dance!” :
In these dark times you may think that every hazard has been identified, but nobody has taken into consideration how dangerous dancing can be?
And from Australia, by Michael Shanks, “Rebooted“: An animated skeleton monster, once a formidable villain of the silver screen, now an out of work actor, learns the film for which he was created is being rebooted without him.
Don´t forget ANNECY is online this year!
