Catherine Prouse and Hannah Quinn 2017 graduating project from Kingston School of Art was inspired after seeing a documentary about the last flower seller in Aleppo.
They decided to tell a story, Laymun (lemon), of a woman who fights destruction in her community by planting lemon trees and distributing them between the terrified survivors.
The delicate animation, all in paper, makes the story´s harsh environment a little less crude, but still, it is what it is. And it´s war. And also, hope. Because when the fragile plants blossom and give lemons, they also give the expectation of a future.
Among other prizes, Laymun won Best Undergraduate Animation and Overall Judges’ Choice Award at the Royal Television Society Awards 2018, Official Selection of The Smalls Film Festival, UK; Manchester Animation Festival, UK; ST. Louis International Film Festival, USA and Foyle Film Festival, UK.
