El Universo en la Semilla Launches Kickstarter to Fund Eco-Friendly Stop-Motion Film in Mexico

A new Kickstarter campaign has launched for El Universo en la Semilla (The Universe in the Seed), a sustainable stop-motion short film currently in development by Ancestral Cine — a Guadalajara-based studio dedicated to handcrafted and environmentally conscious animation.

The campaign seeks to raise MX $450,000 (approximately US $24,080) to fund the full production of the film. Supporters can contribute to help bring this project to life before the campaign closes on November 17, 2025.

A Sustainable Stop-Motion Vision

El Universo en la Semilla is described as a biodegradable stop-motion short — a film created with eco-friendly materials designed to minimize waste and environmental impact. According to the campaign, the production team aims to construct puppets, sets, and props entirely from sustainable and locally sourced materials, highlighting the beauty of natural textures and organic forms.

The story explores the cycle of life and humanity’s connection to nature, using the image of a seed as a metaphor for creation and transformation. This approach blends ecological awareness with poetic storytelling, positioning the film as both a visual and environmental statement.

About the Team

Ancestral Cine is an independent studio based in Guadalajara, Mexico, made up of filmmakers, animators, and artists passionate about sustainability and traditional craft methods. The collective has previously worked on short-form projects and installations that emphasize natural materials and tactile artistry.

With El Universo en la Semilla, the group aims to demonstrate that stop-motion can evolve toward sustainable production practices without sacrificing artistry or quality.

Funding Goals and Rewards

The Kickstarter campaign will support key stages of production, including:

  • Puppet and set fabrication using biodegradable materials

  • Stop-motion animation and cinematography

  • Post-production and sound design

  • Festival submission and distribution

Supporters can choose from a range of reward tiers, such as digital downloads of the finished film, behind-the-scenes access, artwork, and limited-edition eco-crafted collectibles. All tiers emphasize sustainability in their design and delivery.

How to Support the Project

The campaign is live now on Kickstarter at:

Backers can pledge any amount and follow production updates directly from the creators. The team also shares insights and behind-the-scenes progress on their Instagram page, @ancestralcine.

A Step Toward Sustainable Animation

While the stop-motion industry has long been known for its tactile artistry, El Universo en la Semilla aims to push the medium forward by proving that beautiful animation can also be environmentally responsible. For filmmakers, students, and fans of handcrafted cinema, this project offers an inspiring model for the future of sustainable storytelling in animation.
